Sony slashes profit margins on games business to just 2%

Company continues to seek more funding with ¥150 billion bond sale

PS4 ControllerSony has this week slashed its expected profit margins on the PlayStation business for the year to March 2014 from 8 per cent to just 2 per cent.

The company is still sticking to targeted sales of ¥1 trillion for the PlayStation business, as it increases its focus on digital sales through the PlayStation Store and pushes marketing and discounts for the Vita handheld.

“In particular, the company will seek to grow sales of content and services through PlayStation Store and contribute to profit. For PlayStation Vita, the company will aim to secure further sales and profit through various hardware sales initiatives and the introduction of compelling software titles,” said Sony in a statement.

Although Sony is expected to launch the PlayStation 4 at the end of this year, it’s not concentrating on that side of the business until the following financial year ending March 2015.

Today Sony said it will attempt to raise ¥150 billion through the sale of bonds to Japan’s retail investors to raise more cash. The company has recently sold off multiple assets to raise funding, including shares in M3, an office in Tokyo and its US headquarters.

For the last financial year, sales and profits for the PlayStation business dropped signifcantly.

CEO Kaz Hirai also said this week that Sony is considering splitting off its entertainment business, which includes music, TV and films.

Remote Play requirement for PS4 games revealed

Insider source says all upcoming titles will be compatible with its Vita handheld

Remote Play on PS4According to an unnamed Sony developer, the company has mandated Vita Remote Play for all the games coming to its new PlayStation 4 console.

The news came via a report from Digital Foundry, which described its source as “a trusted PlayStation 4 developer source with a proven track record for accuracy.” That developer has said all upcoming PlayStation 4 games are required to work with the PlayStation Vita’s Remote Play function, and is only exempt if the game requires the use of the PS4 Eye.

In theory the new rules for publishers will mean that games like Killzone: Shadow Fall, Ubisoft’s Watchdogs and Blizzard’s Diablo III should all support play on a Vita.

Remote Play is not a new concept for Sony, but the PlayStation 4 has hardware tailored especially for the feature, as opposed to PS3 which used software video encoding.

Infinity Ward: Leaving behind Modern Warfare ”a long decision”

Studio wants to create a new universe with Call of Duty: Ghosts

Call of Duty: GhostsInfinity Ward’s next Call of Duty has been revealed as the all-new Call of Duty: Ghosts, instead of another sequel in Modern Warfare series. According to Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin, the studio’s decision to leave behind the popular sub-series was the desire to create something new.

“[It was] not a hard decision, but a long decision,” Rubin told MCV. “When we finished Modern Warfare 3, we had this big brainstorming session that lasted for weeks. We all really knew we wanted to continue making Call of Duty. We wanted to create a new universe, or a new story at least. We wanted new characters and new experiences.”

“The easy thing would have been – as we had finished the arc of Modern Warfare 1, 2 and 3 – to start a new arc within that same universe. That was the first step. But due to a lot of the changes we wanted to make with this new world, it really dictated out that we needed to make something that wasn’t Modern Warfare.”

Call of Duty: Ghosts is coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 this year, with an updated engine along for the ride. Rubin said that while technology isn’t everything, next generation consoles do provide the chance to increase realism in the series.

“From a gameplay standpoint, we never felt hindered by the generation or the consoles or the tech,” said Rubin. “We always felt gameplay isn’t tech-dependant necessarily. But this new tech allows us to make those worlds that we are playing in more realistic. We always try to make it so the player always feels naturally involved in the world around them. The more realistic and natural the environment, the more the player’s imagination melds with that game.”

Sony CEO: PlayStation 4 is a game console “first and foremost”

Hirai re-emphasizes the company’s commitment to gaming

Sony CEOToday at the D11: All Things Digital conference, Sony Corporation chief executive officer Kazuo Hirai reiterated the PlayStation 4’s focus as a gaming console. The audience at All Things Digital is probably more interested in the console as a media hub, but Hirai insisted that video games is the first step.

“The most important thing we need to make sure we do at least initially is that we all agree and understand that the PS4 is a great videogame console that appeals to video gamers,” Hirai said in a off-stage briefing. “If we miss that part then I don’t think we get the initial establishment of the console. That formula has worked for us with all our consoles, including the PS3.”

Media apps will still be a part of the PlayStation 4 and Sony will be revealing more media-related features in the future, but games come first.

“We take a look at this first and foremost as a game console. We don’t want to end there. That’s an area we will obviously reveal and talk about in the coming months,” said Hirai.

Star Trek into Darkness

Star Trek Into DarknessI am captain James T. Kirk of the Star ship Enterprise, I always love this statement every time i watch a star trek show. This has got to be a long running reboot of the Star Trek franchise. They used some set of actors that just quite suit the roles in which they portray. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew. This is what you get for reading movie spoilers. Okay i went to watch this movie recently, and compared to the first reboot of 2009, this was way better. The beginning entrance was just spot on and i didn’t expect that to happen. The story line and scenes were quite interesting and I felt the producers actually made a good movie. Spock and Jim are not quite good friends yet till the whole Khan incident took place. Now the plot to the entire story was that Khan is a super-humanoid like being and has been banished from his timeline for almost 300years before he was found by Commander Marcus who is a top military official in the Star fleet of Earth. Now after finding Khan, he exploited khan for the purpose of creating weapons that can be used to secure earth in-case of any external attack or invasion. He’s goal seems quite noble but at the cost of Captain Jim’s crew. When he sent Jim and his crew to capture the now rogue Khan, Jim didn’t know the plot of his vendetta and thus the whole Klingon fighter attacked Jim but he luckily escaped through the help of Khan. Now khan is a formidable foe and ruthless to be exact. Jim has to stop general Marcus as well as khan in order to stop both of their plans which is to cause a war with the Klingon for general Marcus and for destroying primitive civilization for khan. Both villains had exterior motive that were against star fleet regulations and only Jim and his crew and in fit position to stop them. In all, its a very funny, interesting and action packed movie to watch. if you’re into tech and space you’ll totally love it.

Busta Rhymes – Chill (ft. Reek Da Villain & J Doe) (Birdman: Rich Gang All Stars)

Rich Gang All StarsBusta Rhymes is by far one of the longest running artist in the music industry. I got to listen to this song titled “Chill” making a Hit with the Jungle Beats Instruments. If you didn’t know Jungle Beats produces a lot of smash instrumental during this past year and its not surprising to see Busta Rhymes as one of those stars that will make it again with a new song. I think ever since he realized what next to do he has been stepping up and that’s always a wonderful thing to see. Anyway I like the beats of this music and i love the lyrics that Busta spits, am guessing the whole YMCMB crew with We the Best crew are also part of the inspiration with this song. I had to put the song here for you to listen and check it out too.
